Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. Refrigerants are liquids stored in your air conditioner’s coils that cool and dehumidify indoor air. Without refrigerants, air conditioning would not be possible. For years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce as a result of its damage to the environment. Introducing R-410A To lessen environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now designed to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and contains no chlorine, so it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel at ease using this refrigerant in Colorado Springs because it’ll help make your cooling system work efficiently, reliably and quietly, and deliver the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made prior to 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You might think about upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately out of production. The old refrigerant will become rare in the next few years, costing you more to use your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Mitchell Heating work with R-410A, so you can be sure we have an AC or heat pump more suited to your needs. Be sure to refrain from using”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
